Stances
Stances (Tachikata)
Stances are the foundation of Shotokan karate and provide the balance, stability, and power needed to perform techniques effectively. Each stance is designed with a specific purpose, whether it is for strong forward attacks, defensive positioning, or maintaining mobility during movement. Proper stance training helps develop leg strength, posture, and body control while allowing techniques such as punches, kicks, and blocks to generate maximum power. Learning the names and pronunciation of these stances helps students understand traditional Japanese terminology used in karate classes around the world.
