Blocks (Uke-Waza)
Blocking techniques are essential for defense in Shotokan karate and teach students how to protect themselves while creating opportunities to counterattack. Blocks can redirect, deflect, or stop an incoming strike while maintaining balance and control. Each block is designed to work with the body’s natural movement, allowing practitioners to transition smoothly from defense to offense. Understanding the terminology and purpose of these techniques helps students appreciate the strategic side of karate while improving timing, coordination, and awareness during training.
